About Us

The Beginning

It was the summer of 2002. Becky had just finished her first year at University of Guelph and Shaun was in school at Sheridan College. Shaun and Becky both had the bright idea to join a coed recreational slo-pitch team, albeit for very different reasons. Becky just wanted to play ball with her then-significant-other, while Shaun’s sole reason was – you guessed it – to meet girls. Both had years of experience playing baseball competitively. They both ended up joining the Free Agents. Two seasons passed during which Shaun admired Becky from afar, while Becky remained totally oblivious to this (as usual). After missing a few games in September 2003, Becky showed up at the last game of their second season together (the semi-final!), and let the team know that she was now single! Shaun pounced on this opportunity and immediately started flirting with her (although, the way he tells it, he had been flirting all along, she was just, again, oblivious!). Unfortunately, Becky had to return to Guelph for school, but the following day they exchanged emails and phone numbers, and after a few weeks of email and phone conversations, Shaun went to Guelph for a visit – and the rest is history!!

They of course still play baseball together, and hopefully will for a long, long time!

The Proposal

Shaun had taken Becky ring shopping in April to get an idea of what to get her. Months passed by with nothing - Becky knew it was coming, but didn't know when or how!

It was Friday, July 13th (yes, Friday the 13th!). Becky hadn't been feeling well, and had to get her Mum to drive her to work that morning. Because she didn't have her car, she asked Shaun to pick her up at the end of her shift at 4pm. She figured that they would just rent a few movies and lie on the couch for a few hours - but Shaun had other plans! He took her home to change into street clothes, then suggested that they go out to dinner at Mexicali Rosa's in downtown Oakville (nothing out of the ordinary). Becky agreed of course, she just can't say no to Mexican food! Shaun mentioned that he had a few errands to run before dinner, but didn't tell her exactly what. The "errand" turned out to be a trip to Toys 'R Us to look at Transformers action figures... this made Becky quite cranky as she was hungry and tired and just wanted to eat dinner!

They went to dinner, and had a nice, completely normal meal (and a few yummy margaritas). After dinner they stopped for coffee (at Starbucks of course), and took a walk at the lake by the lighthouse. They sat down on a big rock to relax, and after a few minutes Becky decided to go and skip rocks at the shore. Shaun followed her after a little while and they sat side by side skipping rocks - Becky couldn't figure out how kids a quarter of her age were able to get the rocks to skip so many times! They began discussing how to choose the best skipping rock, and Shaun started handing her rocks to try. He then handed her a huge stone to try, and she laughed and turned away from him to find another suitable rock to skip. He then said "What about this one"... Becky turned back around and there he was, holding a diamond engagement ring! She was so shocked she didn't say anything for a few seconds, then of course started crying tears of joy. Shaun then asked her "Will you marry me?".... and she said "YES" of course!!

Becky later found out that Shaun had gone earlier that day to ask for her Mum's blessing.  What a sweetheart!

The weekend following the proposal was full of celebration with friends and family! Who ever said Friday the 13th was unlucky?!
